Set in the mystic world of ancient Britain, The Mists of Avalon is a wonderful retelling of the classic Arthurian legend from the point of view of the most important people, the women. It follows the story of the ladies Morgaine, Gwenhwyfar, Viviane, Morgause and Igraine through their lives, loves and losses. Spanning generations, it captures the world where Christianity and the Old Religion are fighting for control, and the seeds of change for a united Britain are grown.
The heart of the story, however, are the many complex relationships within. Igraine is torn between loyalty to her husband Gorlois and her sister Viviane’s prediction that she will bear Britiain’s heir to the roguish Uther, the soon-to-be High King. Morgaine is charmed by Lancelet, but has deep respect for her half-brother Arthur, with whom she unexpectedly spent the night with during the ancient Beltane festival and bore him a son. Gwenhwyfar is torn by her loyalty to her husband and her Christian faith, and her unquestionable love for Lancelet. Ambitious Morgause, wise Viviene, naive Nimue, and crafty Elaine, all with their own desires and downfalls.
